Omega-3 Fish Oils
As you learned in Chapter 3, much of the body's strongest anti-inflammatory composites are produced in the omega-3 family of fatty acids. Specially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplements from fish oil, usually made from salmon oil. EPA plays an increasingly important role in body protection against inflammation as all fatty acids are necessary for health.
It is easy to have the benefit of consuming fish oil or salmon oil capsules: the body does not need to go through the different steps involved in converting alpha-linolenic acid into EPA and DHA. Through consuming tablets, you can break through these steps and possible bottlenecks that obstruct the process and help the body quickly transform EPA into eicosanoids that reduce inflammation.
While later chapters will give you more on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, these two diseases are perfect indicators of how your wellbeing is advantageous in fish oils. Several studies have shown that diets rich in either fish or fish oils boost the composition of the fatty acids in tissues, raise anti-inflammatory rates and decrease rates.
Over two thousand studies on omega-3 fatty acids, which add up to a rich abundance of compelling evidence, have been published in medical journals, and several studies indicate that supplementation and rich omega-3 diets can considerably decrease the concentration on a variety of compounds causing inflammation in humans: thromboxane B2, prostaglandins E2 and C-reactants. Fish oils snuff out a great many pain matches in a very clear way.
This anti-inflammatory activity has been seen time and again in fish oils. Initially, Caterson observed that alpha-linolenic acid (the fatty acid of the parent omega-3) was readily consumed and other fatty acids substituted by chondrocyte, a main form of cartilage cell. The same occurred as he developed EPA and DHA chondrocytes. Yet all the omega-3 fatty acids completely damaged "aggregates," a class of recognized cartilage breakdown enzymes. The genetic code for pro-inflammatory molecules like interleukin-1 (IL-1), the tumor-necrosis factor alfa (TNFa), and cyclooxygenase-1 (Cox-2) has even prevented the use of omega-3 fatty acids.
